No Public Updates on E-bike Usage by the NPS

Unfortunately, there have been no public updates on a resolution related to e-bike use on public lands managed by the National Park Service.

  • You may recall that back in 2019, the NPS disbanded an e-bike advisory group that was accused of secret lobbying
  • Then–Interior Secretary David Bernhardt also instructed national parks to allow e-bikes wherever traditional bikes were allowed.
  • Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) sued, arguing that NPS needed to undertake an environmental assessment before it finalized its e-bike policy.
  • The court sided with PEER, forcing the NPS to conduct an assessment on e-bikes in parks.
  • In June of 2023, the NPS proposed two potential plans and provided an opportunity for public comment.
    • One plan kept the current rule to allow e-bikes anywhere traditional bikes are allowed; the other plan gave park superintendents additional discretion.
    • Wild Cumberland submitted comments expressing our concerns with the policies presented.
  • No updates have been provided by the agency at the time of this publication.
