You don’t have to be a scientist to see that these wetland areas, which are also located on the fringe of federally-protected Wilderness, do NOT need mowing for firebreak.
This damage to developing wetlands occurred under the park’s fire management plan. This plan does not recognize the multitude of ecosystems found on Cumberland Island, and proposes to burn more than 2,500 acres of Wilderness — which is completely unnecessary. Identified locations include Terrapin Point, Old River, Brickhill, and Table Point.
If this disturbance alarms you, we hope you will consider letting CUIS management know — and also urge them to enlist the proper ecological resources to manage its Wilderness.
We’re often contacted by visitors who have witnessed damage to the island’s ecosystem, or blatant disregard of policy protections. We encourage you to report these to the National Park Service and also complete this form.
Thank you for your respectful stewardship of Cumberland Island.
