Wild Cumberland Statement on Managed Hunt Fatality
Wild Cumberland extends its sincere condolences to all affected by the loss of life that occurred on January 8, 2026, during a youth modern weapons managed hunt in the Cumberland Island Wilderness.
We have requested the cancellation of all managed hunts in the Cumberland Island Wilderness until a full investigation is completed and agencies can ensure that hunts can be managed safely.
Hunting is an authorized recreational activity permitted by Congress within Cumberland Island National Seashore.
Wild Cumberland volunteers have historically encouraged participation in managed hunts on Cumberland Island; unfortunately, we cannot continue to endorse this type of use until an investigation and any subsequent safety and management concerns have been fully resolved and the safety mitigation measures are communicated to the public.
