Bobcats

Wild Cumberland opposes the introduction of additional bobcats to Cumberland Island, citing the original introduction as contrary to ecological and Wilderness management. Initially, 37 bobcats were relocated there from the mainland, with individuals tracked and studied. Despite their current estimated population of 24, the research indicates that isolated populations lose genetic variation, highlighting the problematic nature of such interventions in federally protected areas. An appropriate Wilderness Management Plan is advocated to prevent scientific exploitation.
